Download store

Valve's long-running PC storefront, client and community hub in one install.

Verdict

Steam earns the top place because it does the most things well at once: a deep catalogue, a client that runs on three desktop systems and Valve's own handheld, and a clear refund window that lowers the cost of trying something. Its weak point is scale itself, since the store front can feel crowded, so wishlists and curator lists are worth setting up early.

Best for: Owning a large PC library

What works

Huge range, from tiny indies to the biggest releases
Refund requests within 14 days and under 2 hours of play
Workshop mods, cloud saves and family sharing built in

What to weigh up

The sheer volume makes discovery noisy
Most games are tied to the Steam client
